SEAN'S VOICE:

Looking within yourself requires courage. The ability to discover and maintain a constant discourse with the true self is the challenge.

Within my sculptures, I am attempting to access the varying layers of personal discovery. The figures in the clay derive their reality from the true challenge-discovery of the self. Each piece focuses on a moment of the discovery, awakening, and revelation of an individual's journey.

I have been sculpting the human figure for fifteen years. I am the only artist involved with my creations, titles, and stories.

I have lived in Wichita, Kansas all my life. I received a B.A. in History and Art at Newman University in 1994. From a very early age, my life has always revolved around art and its diverse meanings.

Each sculpture is hand carved from earthenware clay and then glazed with an airbrushed underglaze, mason stains, and some acrylic paints, along with a magnesia dioxide compound stain. After sculpting and glazing, then the pieces are fired in a kiln to 1800 degrees F.

I sometimes begin the process with numerous sketches or paintings that allow me to see the three-dimensional pieces. However, most of the sculptures are created through pure gestures of form in the raw clay.

My sculptures depict moments of realizations in the human condition from finding the true voice buried underneath a mask to an awakening of self and dreams yet undreamed.
